As Project EAGLE approaches its closing phase and we are pleased to share remarkable
results achieved over course of the three-year project. These achievements were made
possible by the dedication and collaborative spirit of the entire EAGLE team, which brought together experts from diverse backgrounds. Their unique contributions and insights opened new perspectives and opportunities that went far beyond what we had anticipated at the start of the project.

Our collaborative effort has enabled us to engage a broad audience of SMEs, delivering
tangible and meaningful benefits to their businesses, fostering new career pathways,
and supporting the creation of attractive employment opportunities. In addition to these accomplishments, the project has contributed to the development of stronger, more
skilled, and better-prepared communities, leaving a lasting impact that will continue beyond the project’s conclusion.

Registration is now open for Cybercrimes, Cyber Threats, and Cybersecurity training

We invite you to participate in our cybersecurity training, which will take place ONLINE on February 25-26 from 9:00 AM to 2:30 PM.

The Cybercrimes, Cyber Threats, and Cybersecurity Training, part of the EAGLE Project, is a specialized program designed to address the growing need for enhanced digital resilience in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This training focuses on equipping participants with the foundational knowledge and practical skills to identify, mitigate, and respond to cyber threats effectively.

Through a combination of expert-led sessions and interactive activities, the training highlights key aspects of cybersecurity, including recognizing cybercrimes, understanding emerging threats, and building a robust cybersecurity culture within organizations.

This initiative underscores the EAGLE Project’s commitment to supporting SMEs in their digital transformation journey by empowering them with the tools and knowledge required to navigate the complexities of the digital landscape securely and confidently.

Training duration: 12 academic hours
About the training: The training is designed for employees of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) who wish to acquire or enhance their knowledge in the field of cybersecurity. The training is not intended for advanced IT specialists.

– Introduction
– Theoretical part:
– Cyber threats. Threat statistics, types of incidents, and preventive measures.
– Legal framework. Obligations for businesses under key EU regulations, employee responsibilities, and liabilities.
– Case Study. Practical analysis of real-life cyber incidents affecting SMEs.
– Practical Workshops. Hands-on sessions on identifying and mitigating cybersecurity risks.
– Knowledge Assessment. Interactive testing to consolidate learning outcomes.

About the project:
The EAGLE initiative aims to provide high-level training in digital technologies for SME managers, employees, and job seekers, helping to reduce the digital divide. The project is dedicated to increasing the number of professionals capable of developing and managing digital solutions, strengthening collaboration between SMEs and higher education institutions, and supporting the EU’s digital transformation goals for 2030.

This iteration of the training is organized in collaboration with the CYSSME project, showcasing a perfect synergy between initiatives. Both, EAGLE and CYSSME are contributing to the enhancement of SME cybersecurity resilience.

Registration is now open for Blockchain for business training

EAGLE partners invite you to participate in the BLOCKCHAIN course that will take place ONLINE on 27th February – 6th March 2025.

The training is designed for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) employees who wish to acquire or enhance their knowledge of blockchain technology. Other interested parties such as job seekers, self-employed persons, students or teachers are also welcome. The course is not intended for advanced IT professionals.

The course is offered free of charge upon mandatory REGISTRATION. Upon successful completion, participants will receive a certificate of completion.

Lecturers:

Ivan Sedliacik is an assistant professor of finance at the Faculty of Economics at Matej Bel University in Banska Bystrica, Slovakia. He is an expert in decentralised finance, blockchain technology and its economic and managerial consequences. He also deals with the issues of financial inclusion and financial markets. At Matej Bel University, he introduced three new courses dedicated to blockchain and decentralised finance.

Jan Hunady is an associate professor of finance at the Faculty of Economics at Matej Bel University in Banska Bystrica, Slovakia. His research interests include emerging technology, digitalization, and the role of the public sector in supporting innovation and companies’ digital transition.

The course is implemented as part of the international EAGLE project, which aims to support the digital transformation of European SMEs, in particular through training and digital skills development for employees or job seekers.

2nd iteration of Cybercrime, Cyberthreats, and Cybersecurity Training

On November 5-6th, the Lithuanian Cybercrime Center of Excellence for Training, Research & Education hosted the second session of the highly successful cybersecurity course, “Cybercrime, Cyberthreats, and Cybersecurity.” This two-day intensive training once again brought together small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to enhance their knowledge and resilience in the face of evolving cyber risks.

The course delivered a comprehensive program aimed at equipping participants with the tools and strategies needed to tackle real-world cybersecurity challenges.

Key Focus Areas of the Training:

Approaches to identifying and mitigating cyber threats
Detailed insights into legal responsibilities and cybersecurity management
Practical risk assessment and incident management exercises

Participants engaged in hands-on activities and gained actionable strategies to strengthen their organization’s cybersecurity posture. The training not only addressed current threats but also emphasized proactive measures to prevent future incidents, creating a well-rounded approach to cyber resilience.

Participant Feedback:

Cybercrime, Cyberthreats, and Cybersecurity Training in Vilnius

On June 18-19, the vibrant city of Vilnius hosted the inaugural session of our cutting-edge course, “Cybercrime, Cyberthreats, and Cybersecurity.” Organized under the guidance of Project EAGLE, this intensive two-day training aimed to equip small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with the essential knowledge and practical strategies needed to combat cyber threats and enhance their cyber resilience.

Course Overview

The training provided a comprehensive dive into the critical areas of cybersecurity management, focusing on both theoretical concepts and practical applications. Attendees were introduced to the foundational aspects of cybersecurity, including data privacy, cybercrime, and the evolving legal landscape surrounding these issues.

Participants engaged with the following core topics:

1. Understanding Cyber Threats and Vulnerabilities: the course highlighted the latest trends in cyber threats, offering insights into the most common vulnerabilities and hybrid threats. Practical examples underscored the real-world relevance of these issues.

2. Cybersecurity Responsibilities and Legal Liabilities: emphasis was placed on the legal environment governing cybersecurity and data privacy. Participants learned about the responsibilities and liabilities of employees and managers, and how to communicate effectively about cybersecurity within an organization.

3. Organizational and Technical Security Measures: detailed discussions covered the importance of cyber hygiene, business continuity planning, and the creation of internal cybersecurity documents. The course also tackled the challenge of avoiding mere formal compliance by integrating meaningful security measures.

4. Cybersecurity Risk Assessment and Incident Management: the second day focused on practical risk assessment techniques, including the use of automated tools, and strategies for managing cybersecurity incidents. Participants practiced these skills through hands-on exercises, such as a phishing simulation and a risk assessment using an automated tool.

5. Effective Crisis Management: Through practical examples, the training illustrated how to handle crises triggered by cyberattacks, emphasizing the importance of preparedness and responsible disclosure.

Outcomes and Impact

The event successfully equipped SMEs with actionable insights and tools to enhance their cybersecurity posture. Participants left with a better understanding of how to protect their organizations against cyber threats, manage cybersecurity incidents, and ensure compliance with legal standards.

The training emphasized the importance of continuous education and proactive measures in maintaining cybersecurity. By fostering a culture of awareness and responsibility, SMEs can better navigate the complex landscape of cyber threats and vulnerabilities.

We are excited about the positive feedback from this first session and look forward to organizing future iterations of the course to continue supporting SMEs in their cybersecurity journey.

Project EAGLE Conference „Cybersecurity assurance opportunities for SMEs“ in Vilnius, Lithuania

On 8th of May 2024, the “Cybersecurity Assurance Opportunities for SMEs” conference was hosted by EAGLE partner L3CE at Didlaukio g. 55, Vilnius, primarily focused on the introduction and discussion of the Project EAGLE initiative. This event specifically targeted the cybersecurity challenges faced by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Project EAGLE, co-funded by the EU, aims to support SMEs manpower in covering the gap in digital skills. L3CE’s role is to provide training for enhancing SMEs cybersecurity measures. As the central theme of the conference, the project seeks to equip SMEs with the necessary tools and knowledge to defend against cyber threats.

The conference featured in-depth discussions on recognizing and protecting against new cyber dangers, supplemented by expert advice and thorough case studies. The conference also included comprehensive reviews of current trends in cybersecurity and regulatory updates to ensure attendees are fully aware of the evolving landscape and compliance requirements. L3CE’s course “Cybercrime, Cyberthreats, and Cybersecurity” was introduced aswell. The course is designed to help businesses understand and mitigate the risks posed by cybercrime and be more cyber resilient in general. The first training session was announced for June 18-19, focusing on practical cybersecurity strategies.

A significant component of the conference was the networking session, aimed at fostering collaboration among SMEs and cybersecurity experts. This session provided an opportunity for attendees to share experiences and discuss best practices in cyber defense.

The Project EAGLE conference provided a critical platform for SMEs to gain insights into effective cybersecurity practices and to prepare for the specific challenges they face in the digital arena. The project represents a concerted effort to equip SMEs with the necessary resources to safeguard their operations. The upcoming training in June is part of a broader initiative to provide ongoing support and education to SMEs striving to improve their digital skills.

Project EAGLE, a Town and Gown Initiative

On March 25th in UL’s City Campus, Project EAGLE marked an exciting milestone with the launch of its first micro-credential in Introduction to Data Analytics. Graduate and Professional Studies were honoured to welcome Minister Niall Collins, Minister of State for Skills and Further Education, MEP Billy Kelleher and Provost & Deputy President Shane Kilcommins at the launch.

Both the Provost and Minister Collins took to the podium at the event to commend the initiative, with the Provost emphasizing its role in uniting academia and industry, aptly termed as a “town and gown” initiative.

Why EAGLE is important?

EAGLE is an 11-partner initiative funded by the EU Digital Europe Programme, which focuses on digitisation upskilling for European SMEs. In UL EAGLE is led by Geraldine Carroll with Linda Keane as Project Manager in Graduate and Professional Studies.

Digitalisation is the key for SMEs to become more competitive. One of the principal barriers that European SMEs are facing is employees not having the right skills and the lack of relevant qualifications for upskilling.

The main objective of Project EAGLE is to design and develop high quality specialised training course reflecting the latest developments in key areas, i.e. cybersecurity, data analytics, blockchain and smart energy to support the development of advanced digital skills in the labour force.

UL Course launch

The launch focussed on celebrating partner collaboration and working together in developing, promoting and recruiting students to the Introduction to Data Analytics, and of course, to recognise the participation and work of the students, funded by Project EAGLE.

GPS worked with Skillnet Ireland, Limerick Chamber Skillnet and Shannon Chamber Skillnet in holding focus groups with Chamber companies, to determine knowledge gaps and preferred curricula for SME’s based on skill gaps in data analytics/digitalisation.

Taking this feedback, GPS worked with the Flexible Learning Centre in UL, to customise two modules from the Digitalisation of Business and Industry Processes Professional Diploma, that is Introduction to Data Analytics and Digitalisation of Process as ULs EAGLE offering. Particular recognition goes to Michael Henessy, Dr. Brian McLafferty and Dr. Sean Moore for their excellent industry-led design approach to new programme development.

All stakeholders, that is UL, Skillnet Ireland, Limerick Chamber Skillnet and Shannon Chamber Skillnet, promoted the course and supported the recruitment of 15 fully funded students, which commenced study in January. There was significant demand for the places with over seventy applications.

The delivery of the Introduction to Data Analytics programme involves a blended learning approach, with online, face to face and practical workshops. The students are over half-way through their course and we wish them the best of luck with the remaining course work.

The partners are now working together to promote further to SME’s. The next module, Digitalisation of Process will be offered in September 2024 marking another significant step in the journey of Project EAGLE towards fostering digital empowerment among European SMEs.

Greetings Project EAGLE Community,

As we move into the next chapter of our journey together, we take a moment to express our heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you. Your dedication and participation have been fundamental to our progress. As we have entered the second year of our project, it’s a moment of reflection and anticipation for what lies ahead.

Spreading the word about EAGLE – our awareness campaign

In order to create awareness about what project EAGLE has to offer, one of the few main activities during first year focused on reaching out to SMEs and relevant stakeholders. During this time, we had several opportunities to disseminate information about EAGLE. Our consortium partners hosted quite few events and presented EAGLE at various events and gatherings organized by 3^rd parties, showcasing the project’s goals and objectives to a wider audience. Among the many activities, we are highlighting the following events:

Project EAGLE was showcased at the CRITIS2023 Conference, a crucial forum for discussing contemporary challenges. L3CE’s presentation underscored the critical need to bridge the digital skills gap, emphasizing the project’s importance in the current landscape.

A promotional event for the EAGLE project by FAE in collaboration with DIHBU and UBU, took place at the Palacio de Congresos del Fórum Evolución in Burgos. This event was part of The Industrial Track 4.0 Technical Conference’s fourth edition, within the Industry 4.0 2023 Technology Meeting. The conference aimed at spreading knowledge about Industry 4.0 technologies and innovative solutions for industrial settings, featuring contributions from research centres, advanced engineering firms, and the industry.

FAE Burgo, DIHBU, and UBU organized three online webinars, effectively sharing details about EAGLE with our target audience.

The University of Limerick partners participated in the Building Better Business Event, where they had the chance to meet Minister Simon Coveney. This event provided a fantastic platform to highlight project EAGLE further.

While we’ve highlighted some key moments above, it’s important to acknowledge that our partners have participated in numerous other events and presentations, each significantly contributing to spreading the word about EAGLE. Due to space constraints in this newsletter, we cannot detail every event, but we deeply value and appreciate the efforts of all involved in these vital outreach activities. All these moments were crucial for spreading the word and getting others excited about what we’re doing.

In addition to the presentations, every partner made a strong commitment to network with other EU projects and initiatives. During the first year of the project, we managed to reach out to 45 other initiatives. This effort was aimed at creating collaborations and finding synergies that can enhance our work. By connecting with others, we’ve been able to learn, share knowledge, and strengthen our project through these valuable partnerships.

Reflecting on our course designing journey – achievements and milestones

The path we’ve traversed together over the past year has been marked by shared goals, challenges overcome, and milestones achieved. One of the first steps in our project was hosting focus groups by partners who are designing courses. These sessions brought together industry experts and representatives from various institutions and associations and industrial entrepreneurs from different sectors of activity, creating a platform for in-depth discussions and feedback collection. This early engagement was essential for understanding the specific needs and challenges faced by SMEs in the digital landscape. The insights gathered from these focus groups laid a solid foundation for our course design work, ensuring that our educational materials would be both relevant and impactful. This proactive approach of involving key stakeholders from the outset not only enriched our course content but also aligned our objectives with the real-world demands of SMEs.

Further, an important milestone in our journey was the peer review of our course designs by experts. This important step confirmed the quality and usefulness of our work for the EAGLE project. It also prepared us for the next important part: the pilot courses.

After the peer review, our course designing partners started running pilot courses. These pilots were essential to test if our courses really meet the needs of SMEs. They also allowed us to get feedback directly from the users. Incorporating this invaluable feedback received from participants was crucial to refine our courses and make them even better.

The pilots were a big success and showed the hard work and cooperation of everyone involved. After these pilots, we’re now using the feedback we got to improve our courses. This process of getting feedback directly from the SMEs and making improvements is key to making sure our courses stay top-notch and relevant.

Moving forward, our goal is to offer three editions of each course. This is part of our commitment to providing the best learning experiences and to improving digital skills in SMEs. This plan shows our careful approach to meeting the project’s objectives and enhancing digital skills within SMEs.

EAGLE Conference – a milestone event

The EAGLE Conference in Banská Bystrica on January 25, 2024 marked a key moment in our calendar, focusing on “Digital Skills in SMEs.” It brought together industry experts, academics, and project partners for a discussion on the digital challenges and opportunities small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) face today. The conference covered a wide range of important topics, highlighting the constantly changing digital environment. With more than 200 participants joining both in person and online, the event showcased the wide interest and critical need to improve digital skills in SMEs.

Panel discussions explored topics from “Data Analytics and Cybersecurity” to “Blockchain, Emerging Tech, Industrial Robotics, and Energy Systems.” These weren’t just talks but a push for action to tackle today’s digital needs. The conference also became a great place for networking and starting new partnerships, highlighting our belief that working together is essential for progress.

The EAGLE Conference story is one of community, innovation, and forward momentum. It is a testament to the power of collective expertise in shaping the future of SMEs in the digital age. The overwhelming positive feedback and the dynamic exchanges at the conference have set the stage for future initiatives. We are committed to continuing this dialogue and fostering the digital skills ecosystem in SMEs.

Forward together

As we look to the future, our resolve to bridge the digital skills gap in SMEs remains unwavering. The challenges ahead are significant, but our collective efforts have already shown that we are more than capable of meeting them head-on.
